Terms, definitions and abbreviations

This article uses the terms in compliance with the Town-Planning Code of the Russian Federation, the Federal law “On Technical Regulation”, the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, Code of Practice 17.13330, GOST R 52953 as well as the following terms with the following definitions:

roof (covering): Upper bearing and enclosing structure of a building or erection intended for the protection from external climatic and other actions.


1. The roof usually consists of:

    • structural elements;
    • coatings, separating available building space from the environment;
    • necessary components of roof safety systems and maintenance.

2. Roof structural elements are:

    • bearing and enclosing structures;;
    • roof or waterproofing layer;
    • waterproofing layer (can be absent in case of cold roof);
    • steamtight layer (can be absent in case of cold roof);
    • separating and auxiliary layers.

roof (waterproofing layer): The roof element protecting the building from atmospheric precipitation penetration. Roof structure and repair are also described on our website.

roof layer: Material (for example, the products of Abrin, TM) or a roof system element, performing a specific task.

roof design: Conducting the works on the installation of bearing and/or enclosing rood structures, including roof, which cover all auxiliary works necessary for satisfying functional requirements to roof.

attic: Ventilated uninhabited space between roof, external walls and upper floor overlap intended for maintaining optimal temperature&humidity conditions of roof elements.

gable end: Upper part of a building face restricted by two roof slopes on either side and the roof eave at the base.

ridge: Upper horizontal roof hip forming a watershed. [CoP 17.13330.2011]

roof slope: Ratio of the decrease of roof section to its length expressed as a relative value in percent.


One can take an angle between the line of the maximum roof slope and its projection on a horizontal surface as roof slope and express it in degrees.

neck gutters: Angled water gutter on a roof, formed by the intersection of its slopes. [CoP 17.13330.2011]

active ventilation: Artificially conducted air exchange in the roof, requiring energy costs.

passive ventilation: Air exchange due to convective air flow in the roof, provided by design solutions.

active ventilation element: Roof design element and (or) equipment, providing active ventilation.


Active ventilation elements include conical ventilation turbines and roof fans.

passive ventilation element: Roof design element, providing for roof passive ventilation.


Passive ventilation elements include ridgy and eave airholes, dormer windows, aerators, ventilation roof tiles and chimney caps.

roof system: A set of materials, layer-by-layer assembled on the roof and providing the fulfillment of roof functions depending on its intended use and structure.


The selection of roof system materials should correspond to the project and (or) requirements set by material producers.

roof layer: Material or a roof system element, performing a specific task.

lathing: A set of wood boards nailed to a rafter system on which roof covering is fixed.


Lathing can be of two types: sheathing and open (with a large distance between boards).

counter batten: Rails or wooden bars making up an additional layer of sloping roof lathing for fixing underroof foil and forming a ventilation space between film and roof.

roof structural element: Roof structural part performing some of roof functions.


Structural elements include: neck gutters, ridges, connections, parts of a rainwater system, parapet walls, dormer windows, chimney caps, fixing elements, etc.

heat insulation material: The material, intended for decreasing heat transfer, with heat insulation properties which depend on its chemical composition and/or its physical structure. [GOST R 52953-208, cl. 3.1]

roof safety system: A set of elements fixed on the roof structure and intended for providing the safety of people and property during construction, operation and roof overhaul.


1. Roof safety systems are divided into passive and active.

2. A passive safety system serves for the provision of third party safety as well as for the preservation of their property during roof operation. The system of passive safety include protective enclosures preventing object falling from roofs, snow retaining devices, anti-icing systems, lightning arresters, etc.

3. An active safety system serves for providing the safety of staff conducting the works on its operation and repair. The active safety system elements include wall-mounted and slope ladders for the ascension to the roof, enclosing structures, communicating bridges, hooks for fixing personal safety systems, etc.
